President’s Message

Allan Hoshida

Congratulations to everyone for a very successful Hanamatsuri Service and annual Dharma School play on April 8. This year’s presentation, “Pirates of the Caribbean — The Golden Chain,” was a wonderfully written script/play and very enjoyable to watch all of the on-stage performances. Special thanks to all of the Dharma School students and teachers, volunteers and parents. Special recognition goes to adult advisors Cliff Adams and Ann Amioka, Directors Sydney Adams and Tadao Koyama, Assistant Director Emily Furukawa and all of the stage crew/helpers. Great job everyone! Thank you also to Kiyo’s Florist for donating the carnations and moss for the hanamido.

Part of our Hanamatsuri service this year was a special recognition of Akio Seo as our newest Elder.

A short bio of Akio: Born on March 11, 1936 to Gunroku and Misao Seo in Sacramento, California. Akio was next to last in a family of five brothers and four sisters. He grew up in Penryn, attended Penryn Elementary School, Placer High School in Auburn, Sierra College in Auburn, and is a graduate of Los Angeles State College. He worked in various departments with the State of California and retired in 1998 after a 42-year career, working mainly in the administrative areas: accounting, administrative analyst and information technology.

Akio has been married to Ruth Seo for 40 years and they have two sons. The eldest, Derek, 36, lives in Sacramento with his wife, Audrey, and their two sons, Ryan and Kyle. Their younger son, Kirk, 34, is unmarried and lives in Downey, California. Akio and Ruth moved from Los Angeles in 1969 to Sacramento and they have lived here ever since. They became members of YABA soon after where Akio served as treasurer, vice president and president in the 1970s, also began serving in the Betsuin Board in the 1980s as a board member and was an auditor and treasurer. He served as Betsuin President in 1997 and 1998 and for six months in 1999, completing the term for Lillian Amioka, who passed away in June 1999. He also served as chairman of the Sacramento Bazaar.

Some highlights in Akio’s life were finishing college, getting married, having two sons and two grandchildren, overseeing as Betsuin president, the fundraising and construction of our 100th Anniversary Nokotsudo and remodeling project of our temple complex. He also was a member of the Sacramento County Grand Jury from July 1997 to June 30, 1998.

Congratulations, Akio, for having a wonderful family and on your many years of service to our temple/community. We all look forward to your continuing participation, thoughtfulness and guidance on the Betsuin Board of Trustees. Personally, Meriko and I would like to thank you and Ruth for being such great friends for almost 30 years.

On March 18, I was invited to the sports program Coach’s Appreciation Dinner held in the kaikan and attended by many players, parents, volunteers and invited guests. This evening was to recognize and thank all of the great coaches who volunteered to help with the sports program this past year and it was very impressive to see how many people are involved in the program. Keep up the good work and thank you to all of the dedicated adult leaders, volunteers and coaches.

The 2007 Rev. Yukawa Coach’s Award was presented to Bruce Kushida as the outstanding example for coach of the year. It was very moving listening to Bruce’s players giving their thanks to him and it was quite evident that his players recognized the special ways in which he treated each and everyone of them. Congratulations, Bruce! I know that Rev. Yukawa would be very proud of you, and thank you very much for all that you have done and continue to do.

Also, Nicole Nakata was recognized as the outstanding graduating senior girl. Congratulations, Nicole, and please continue your great work and community service.

Finally, the guest speaker for the evening was Rodney Kunisaki, who has been a very active member of past Betsuin Sports Committee/programs and a leader in our Sacramento community. Thanks, Rodney, for your thoughtful and meaningful comments regarding the value and example that our coaches, as well as adult leaders, should have/aspire to and the impact they will have on our kids participating in the sports/youth programs.

I would like to thank the Sports Committee for the $500 donation to help pay for a new screen in the kaikan.

A follow up to the Jodo Shinshu Center (JSC) and BCA 21st Century Campaign: Our Board of Trustees in April voted to somehow help with the funding of the JSC building/financing. The board has not yet decided on how or how much will be our contribution. For those Betsuin temple individuals/members who are truly interested in donating/giving to the campaign, please review the Wheel of Dharma news articles and donation forms. If there are any questions, comments, concerns, please call me or leave a message at the church office.

RB's Corner

Rinban Bob Oshita

Hello and welcome to the month of May….

Although we know well that each day is precious and we know that we must try to appreciate each and every day; most of us fall into our usual routine and in doing so, we take so very much for granted. When we are enjoying good health, we just feel this is as it should be.

In early February, I began experiencing a sensation of cardiac arrhythmia. The episodes would occur each day more times than I could count. The episodes of arrhythmia would cause an involuntary cough and so there was no hiding them from Patti. Her growing concern encouraged me to see the doctor and have an EKG done.

That same day, I went to the cardiologist where I was set up with a 24-hour monitor. This was followed with an echocardiogram. All the tests confirmed an arrhythmia: Premature Ventricular Contractions. There is little that can be done about this condition. Many people have it…and it’s not fatal unless the heart goes into tachycardia (I went online to research this, as people do nowadays).

But this experience caused me to very naturally review my life again with a renewed urgency. Realizing again that regardless of how healthy we may feel, life can end most suddenly, I began to ask myself some important questions. My immediate questions were: Is my life in order? Do I have much regret? Is there something I feel I really need to do before I die?

After much deep reflection and critical analysis, I felt, “Yes, my life’s in decent order. No, I have very few regrets.” I pronounced my life “FULFILLED.” Then with conviction, I expressed these things to Patti and told her, “My life has far exceeded my expectations. It’s been great. My only wish was that my wife was nicer to me….”

Patti of course shook her head and said, “You seem just fine to me….”

It is often the health adversity we must face that makes us remember again that rain or shine, hot or cold, every day is a good day. Every opportunity to be with those we love is one to cherish. In Jodo Shinshu, to live with such Awareness and with such Appreciation, we call “A life of Nembutsu.”

Let’s not wait for adversity to appreciate all that we have.

Namo Amida Butsu….

Sports

Alan Wu

Time is just flying by. Here it is May already, and what does May mean to you? Well, just like the time-honored traditions we all grew up with, May brings up all kinds of thoughts of looking back and giving thanks to those who have stepped up, out of the crowd, and contributed to our sports program.

First and foremost, we would like to acknowledge the following people for their very generous donations to our program:

Russell Tanihana

Steve Sasaki

Keith Okasaki

Kenny Yasuda

Thank you all for your generosity. It is very much appreciated.

Secondly, we honor and pay tribute to the coaches who are the backbone of our basketball program with the annual Coach’s Appreciation Dinner that was held in March. We fully recognize and also appreciate all the time, energy and effort it requires to coach a basketball team, and this year due to the success of our tournament concession stands, the Sports Committee agreed to subsidize the dinner. Hah, I bet you thought you would get only a $.99 Junior Whopper and a small drink for your $2 dinner! Thank you to Ford Kinoshita for masterfully preparing the animal flesh that we all enjoyed so much that evening. The dinner was also a great success due in a large part to the following people who stepped up to lend a helping hand, which is always needed and appreciated: Lisa Kikumoto, Arlene Sakazaki, Lori Yee, Derrick Adachi, Lyndsey Kikumoto, Ryan Sakazaki, Marty Sakata, Roger Ikemoto, David Yasuda, Ken Okuhara, Steve Sasaki, Jeff and Jimmy Tsuruoka, Makenna Huey, Missy Kuyama, Arlene Matsuura, Don and Linda Honda, Keith Adachi, Dale and Dina Louie, Paul Wakabayashi, Emily Yamamoto, Jason Taira, Glenn Kumamoto, Rod Wong, Denis Ishisaka, Michael Horita Sr., Ron Ikemoto, Robyn Kimura, Jerry Lee, Cole Taira, Scott Kumamoto, Ryan Wong, Davis Yasuda, Brian Ishisaka, Chase Wilkins, Jeremy Fong, Michael Horita Jr., Tyler Sakata, Karen Shimada, Janis Fong, Teri Yasuda, Lesly Ishisaka, Brian Okamoto, Jason Okamoto, Lauren Kikumoto, Doris and Kayla Arakaki, and a special thank you to Clyde Uchida for his generous rice donation that fed all 500 of us at the dinner.

The above list is by no means a complete listing of all of those who helped out. We sincerely apologize to anyone who helped us and was not mentioned. It is a busy and hectic night for the committee and we honestly could not recall each and every person who helped out, BUT please be assured that the committee fully appreciates all the families in our sports program for all the tangible and intangible contributions they make for the sports program.

At the Coach’s Dinner, not only are the coaches recognized, but two of our players are recognized for their overall contribution to our sports program, both on and off the basketball court for their entire career as a Betsuin player. The Aki Fukushima Award recognizes these players for their basketball sportsmanship and also their Dharma citizenship. All the winners of this award throughout the years can be viewed in the trophy case next to the pay phone that isn’t there anymore. This year the recipients of the Aki Fukushima Award are Nicole Nakata and Jared Honda. Congratulations to Nicole and Jared!

And each year a coach is selected for the Rinban Yukawa Award. The coach that receives this award has not only devoted many years to the sports program, but also has taught and instilled into our children the essence of our sports program as Rinban Yukawa envisioned it many years ago, namely the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, citizenship and the life lessons that sports brings out. This year the Rinban Yukawa Award recipient is Bruce Kushida. Congratulations, Bruce! After over 10 years as a Betsuin coach, Bruce, you still have couple more years to go, so sit down and wipe your eyes!

As another reminder: the March Madness tournaments are over and done for the year, but the kids are still expected to attend Dharma School until the annual picnic. Attendance is still tracked and will be used to determine eligibility for next season. Attendance records are kept on a “rolling calendar,” which means attendance is tracked for the last 12 months. In September, attendance records are based from September of last year through September of this year, so attendance in April, May and June is very important. Returning players may start in September with an attendance record of less than 60 percent, and therefore not eligible to play, so keep attending and everything will take care of itself.

Are you tired of your usual routine of taking your kids to practice and then picking them up from practice week after week after week? Want some excitement in your life? Well, get out of being a taxi driver for your kids and avail your services to the Sports Committee and be a part of the fast-paced, high tech world of sports management. We have a few positions available and we are looking for fun and exciting people to fill them. So, please take some time to consider making a change in your life and join the Sports Committee team….Operators are standing by, or just talk with your division coordinator on Sunday in the courtyard, or just leave your name with Tak in the church office. We do more by noon than most people do by 12 p.m.! Inquire within. Must be a California resident, void where prohibited.

Important Dates to Remember:

May 5  Cinco de Mayo

May 13          Mother’s Day

May 28          Memorial Day

Dharma School News

Richard Kai

The Northern California Dharma School Teachers’ League (NCDSTL) hosted the 56th Annual Conference of Federation of Dharma School Teachers at the Doubletree Hotel on April 27-29. The conference was again a wild hit with more than 200 attendees — a number far greater than expected joining the NCDSTL conference coordinators comprised of many Sacramento Betsuin Dharma School teachers and administrators. The theme of the conference was “Dharma for Dummies II,” the sequel to the 2002 conference hosted by NCDSTL at the same hotel.

The 200 attendees were divided into eight equal groups with NCDSTL members facilitating three workshops throughout the day. The theme for each workshop was centered off Dr. Satsuki Ina’s opening remarks on self-awareness and personal character building. The facilitators used the highlights of Dr. Ina’s keynote address to transition into the morning workshop entitled “Discovery,” with several ice breaker tools used to acquaint each group to the material developed for the conference. The second theme, called “Going Deeper,” started after the lunch hour and built on the morning’s awakening session. The final workshop was constructed around the theme “Making it Real.”

I’m sure the conference attendees were again blown away with the deep understanding of the Dharma and Buddhism by the Northern California chapter temples and were impressed by the tools used to bring out the deep awareness of the self through the Dharma for Dummies theme. A sample of the tools that were used by the workshop facilitators to create the warm, friendly, and comfortable workshop surroundings included:

- Bringing Out the Animal in You

- Sitting Meditation

- Who Am I (an ice breaker of famous people similar to Indian Poker)

- Taking off the Mask; Who Am I and Who are You

- Walking Meditation

- Colors: Understanding Your Preferences and Characteristics

- Meditation: What Are You Aware of Now?

- Lesson Planning

- No Monku Contract

A discussion of each item followed each tool with the facilitators encouraging the participants to share their feelings and thinking with the group. The facilitators emphasized the most important outcome for the two-day event was to have FUN and enjoy NCDSTL’s hospitality. The closing ceremony on Sunday marked the end of more than six months of planning for this event.

As the conference co-chair, I extend my thanks and appreciation to the Northern California chapter temples, workshop facilitators and room helpers, and the Women’s Buddhist programs from Placer, Marysville, Florin, Lodi, Stockton, Walnut Grove and Sacramento for hosting and stocking the Hospitality Room with ample food and drinks for all attendees.

P.S. If I didn’t say it before, then let me say it now by extending my thanks Cliff Adams and Ann Amioka and all those who made the Hanamatsuri Service and Play a hit revue.

Girl Scouts Troop 569

Hello everyone! Congratulations to all for making this year’s Thinking Day a wonderful success! This year's program, “The Amazing Race,” was well coordinated by Seniors 2.

Seniors 1: Congratulations to Allison Wu, Kristi Morita, Courtney Hori and Brooke Muranaka for receiving their final approval for the Gold Award. We also understand all the girls are accepting their college offers about this time.…I’m sure we’ll hear more about that soon!

Seniors 3: Congratulations to Lauren Otani and Michelle Tamai for earning their Silver Award. Lauren created CDs of relaxing piano music for hospital patients undergoing long-term treatments. The recordings were actually from pieces played by Lauren, her friends and other Girl Scouts! Lauren also made relaxation cards to assist the patients in easing their discomfort by focusing on various methods of relaxation. Michelle worked with residents of Primrose Alzheimer’s Center and led craft projects, sewed material bags to carry their personal belongings, played piano for entertainment, and coordinated holiday crafts and a party. Being exposed to the residents’ medical needs and limitations was a learning experience for Michelle, and she certainly enjoyed her interaction with them.

Brownies 3: Hosted a dinner for Reiko Kurahara and her “crew” in appreciation for all they do for us on Sundays, and everyday during the week. The girls helped prepare and serve the meal that included a tender tri-tip, smoked salmon, fancy potatoes, tasty asparagus, dessert, and other delicacies. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Shimada for their generous financial gift to the troop, and the “crew” for the yummy box of cookies. We also completed two Try-Its as well. The first was “Sports and Games” and “Playing Around the World”  — where the girls played traditional games from Japan, Sudan, Zimbabwe and American games.

Finally, it was great to watch the spirit and teamwork between Brownies 3, 4 and 5, in learning their dance routine and German cultural music for Thinking Day. It is never easy coordinating almost 40 performers, but each girl knew her part, and executed beautifully.

Dharma Message

Rinban Oshita encouraged the Fujinkai members to pass along the family stories because if we do not, then they will be lost. He recalled that April is the time when his parents passed away. He stated that he was fortunate to be able to spend time with his mother before she passed away. During one of those times, she told a story about how clever he was when he was young. It seems that once he drew on a wall. His mother made him clean it up and told him not to draw on that wall again. Later he drew on the opposite wall. After cleaning that up she took him around the house and pointed out all the walls that he was not to draw on. Later, he drew on a door. After cleaning that up, she told him not to draw on any doors. Later, he drew on the door frame. What a delightful family story. It is a great opportunity for grown people to get to see and know their younger selves. Pass these family treasures on.

President’s Message/Molly Kimura

Thanks were expressed to all the committee chairwomen and members for all their work.
