Sangha
President’s
Message Allan Hoshida As many of you may have heard, Reverend Kaz and Michiko will be going back to Tokyo, Japan for their “Green Card Interview” in late May/early June. Socho Ogui, Reverend Bob and myself have written letters of support on behalf of the Nakatas. It was only a few years ago that we all met RK. I remember when at our 2003 Annual Bazaar, Frank Hirota introduced me to Reverend Kaz, who had just arrived from Japan. Although almost four years have passed, it seems like only yesterday. Both RK and Michiko have come a long ways, established many wonderful relationships, contributed meaningfully to our temple, and have settled into their marriage. We all wish them the very best. Good luck with your interviews, Reverend Kaz and Michiko! The end of the year Dharma School Picnic will again be held at William Land Park on June 10. We will be recognizing Dharma School students, as well as formally recognizing the outstanding high school graduating seniors for their contributions to our temple/organizations/schools and their many individual achievements. This is a very special class of seniors, so please make an effort to attend and say congratulations to all. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the Dharma School teachers, assistants and leaders (especially Richard Kai, Carol Tamai, Ken Koyama, et al.) for their commitment, dedication to make our Dharma School the best in BCA. It was quite evident several weeks ago what an impact you all make to a young, impressionable Dharma student like Keith Okasaki. As part of his dharma talk, Keith in his reflections about Sunday School and the opportunities he has been so fortunate to have had, acknowledged each of his former teachers, i.e. Harley and Judy Inaba, Geoff and Sherrie Inenaga, etc. (and even brought some of the craft items he made to share during his talk). Whether we like it or not, the things that we as adults do and say will make a deep impression upon our young people growing up. Thanks to all of the teachers who, through their time/effort, set positive excellent examples for our youth and future leaders of our temple and community. The annual Bazaar will be held on the weekend of August 11 and 12. Once again it will be led by our hard-working co-chairs, Steve Kawano and Robbie Midzuno. Steve and Robbie, together with their organizing committees/organizations, will be looking for lots of help and assistance throughout the set-up, running and closing of the Bazaar. This is a wonderful time to come together for a common cause, mingle with many friends/relatives, share in the very unique Bazaar experience, make new friends and help out the temple. Thank you all in advance for everything you have done and continue to do to support/help our temple and sangha. Dr. Ken Furukawa, one of our members who has been stationed in Afghanistan for the last five months, has been in contact with several of our temple members. One such letter thanked the Second Grade Dharma School class (teachers John Fujimoto and Bobby Tanaka) for their wonderful food items sent to Ken through the donations that the class pooled together. It was noted further in the letter that several Afghan children have been admitted to the intensive care unit. Many of them are not well enough to do little more than walk slowly. Very few have gone to school, so most do not know how to read or write. Most are very poor so they do not have very much at home. If anyone would like to donate items, i.e. shoes, clothing and basic hygiene items like toothpaste, brushes, etc., please start collecting them. At the last Board of Trustees meeting, it was agreed that the Social Welfare Subcommittee/Kelvin Mark will soon organize a collection at our temple and coordinate/help distribute supplies to the local Afghan people through the Task Force Chaplain’s Office. Please be looking for this announcement and do what you can. Finally, within the last couple of months, a special Board of Trustees subcommittee, together with the executive committee, has been looking into the needs for our temple and sangha for not only this year, but hopefully way into the future. This discussion was started when the adjacent property owner had approached the Betsuin to see if we are interested in purchasing the adjacent parcels to the east of church property. After much discussion/debate/consideration, the board decided not to pursue the purchase at this time. However, it was decided that we start to convene discussions and reviews on what the future looks like for our temple here in Sacramento. We will have many items to discuss/consider and it will take awhile to review and digest all of the requested information. We will keep you informed as to its progress and major developments. As always, please call/e-mail me if there are any questions, comments, concerns you may have. Thank you. Rinban Bob Oshita Hello…and welcome to the month of June. With the coming of every June, we celebrate the end of another successful Dharma School term. There is no doubt that the hundreds of children in our Dharma School Program are a wonderful reflection of the great vitality of our Betsuin. Our Sports Program, the Betsuin Scouting Programs and the YBA are all tied to our Dharma School, each providing another arena of activities we are able to offer our young members. Our kids are so fortunate. But with success comes complications. In organizing our very well- attended programs, we have, from time to time, very well-intentioned parents trying to create exceptions to what should be common-sense rules of organization. Whether they are leaders, coaches, parents or coordinators, situations arise because some want to bend or reinterpret the simple rules of organization. Once this happens, precedent is set. The regulations that once provided reasonable order become mere recommendations…to be overlooked if they are inconvenient. This brings about the creation of more rules and regulations to close the “loopholes” to prevent such manipulation. Even within our truly exceptional Sangha, we find such games being played. I wonder, “Why are some people so determined to create such disharmony?” “Are they thinking about what is best for the Betsuin and for the children or are they just concerned about getting their way?” I wonder this too: “What are we really teaching our kids with our actions?” I still feel our Betsuin is the Best Temple in BCA. And we have great programs providing opportunities for our children to develop valuable life skills. But with hundreds of families and children participating, we must make an even greater effort to work together, harmoniously. Our Betsuin should be a place that welcomes everyone, a place where the Dharma lives in our thoughts, in the things we say and the things we do. Our Betsuin should be a place of warmth and fellowship; it is not a private club for those who feel entitled or elite. As I’ve mentioned before, I think we could be 10 times as large and still be meaningful. How can we do this? We can do this by not only saying, but by living the Three Treasures, by living with focus on the Three Treasures: - To be grateful for the clarity the Buddha offered; - To appreciate the freedom of thought that the Dharma provides; and - To live as a Sangha: people who are trying to live their lives Dharma-Centered and not Self-Centered. Patti Oshita Welcome to the month of June! The month of June is the beginning of a summer break from our Dharma School classes and our weekly Girl Scouts meetings. It’s a time to look forward to summer vacation; to hosting the BCA Youth Retreat that will conclude with our July Obon weekend; and of course it is impossible to overlook our annual Bazaar This past week, as I was trying to write this article, I was burdened with the summons to jury duty. Yes, I know there are those who truly enjoy this responsibility, but for me… it is one of the dreaded duties of being an adult. I have been summoned each year for the past three years. Previously, I was fortunate to only have to check in and be on call for a week. Then my obligation was fulfilled. This year, I was again asked to check in by phone. But this year, my luck ran out on Wednesday night. I was asked to come in Thursday morning at 8 a.m. I was stunned to hear that we were being considered for a 4-6 week trial. Hearing this, I looked around to see the faces of all my possible fellow jurors frowning, some quietly mumbling to themselves while others sat with contorted faces of disbelief. Everyone around me was complaining about how being a juror will inconvenience their lives. I heard things like: - “I can’t be away from work that long.” - “I have relatives coming in from Arkansas next week. I can’t do this.” - “I can’t do this. I need to call my company to see if they will pay for jury duty.” - “How do I get out of this?” - “Why do we have to fill out this 27-page questionnaire?” I admit that I too bemoaned the possibility of being in a trial that may last over a month. I too considered this a tremendous inconvenience. But then I happened to look down at my wrist and I saw the “no monku” wristband we had made for the teacher’s conference we recently hosted. And I thought, “I am surrounded by monku.” I was feeling the monku well up inside of me. I had to stop and remember again the big Dharma picture. In Buddhism, we are taught that when our minds and hearts have even the smallest monku…even a sliver of complaint, there is no room for even the slightest feeling of Appreciation…let alone the deep Gratitude of O-Nembutsu. I did a double take on my wristband again, took a few deep breaths, and told myself, “Think gratitude!” And things began to take perspective. Everyone here is enjoying relatively good health. We all have eyes that see and ears that hear and legs that move us about with little effort. We can’t get out of jury duty because at this moment, we have no real problems in our lives that will excuse us. How fortunate we are, to be doing so well, that our only problem in life is to be summoned to jury duty. Sure, we all have many more places we wish we could be. We all have responsibilities and people depending on us. But in the big picture of things, being summoned for jury duty is not a major problem. Of course, I was not overjoyed with the possibility of being selected, but I was also seeing how wonderful my life really is…as my Dharma Eyes were opening. I began to feel that I would probably now be selected for sure. But to the relief of all in my jury pool, we were all excused. Happy sighs of relief filled the room that was just moments before filled with irate complaining prospective jurors. As we all happily filed out of the room, I wondered how long this sense of well-being would last. For few it was not long. They were immediately on their cell phones complaining about another wasted day. I said to myself, “Let’s see how long you can keep your Dharma Eyes open and feel grateful for all your good fortunes, great and small.” I did well. I felt no Monku until I got in the car and was trying to maneuver out of the parking lot when another car came into my path in a hurry to leave the lot. As I started to think not so “pure and beautiful thoughts,” I looked down at my “no monku” wrist band and couldn’t help but smile. Only minutes ago I felt a sense of well being and already, I felt irritation. The “no-monku” wristband is my quiet reminder to keep a big picture perspective; to keep my Dharma eyes open and to be grateful for this life I have. Have a great summer… Until next time… Greeters’ ProgramWinter/Spring 2007 During the Dharma School session, the following Betsuin Board members will warmly welcome visitors to Dharma Service on Sundays. As the sun sets on another basketball season, only the Central Cal Cobra tournament is left. Only the family social at Blackbeard’s Amusement Park is left. Only the opportunity to patronize the Indian casinos in Fresno is left. Ah, yes, what a fitting end to the 2006-07 season. For those teams making the trek to the Fresno area, good luck! And I mean that in whatever game you play! We are attempting to get a current inventory of our sports equipment, so please turn in all uniforms, basketballs, first aid kits and any other church basketball equipment you may have taking up space in your car, garage or house. Your Division Coordinator will be collecting all this stuff, so make sure you have it ready when they call. Even though the basketball season is pretty much over, the Sports Program 2006-07 season ends on August 31, 2007, which means we a have few more months to go before registration for the 2007-08 season begins in September, which means we still have a few more 2006-07 obligations to the church to fulfill. At the end of June we will be pulling out and setting up the big tent for Obon and Bazaar. Then at the end of July, we will be converting the parking lot and courtyard into our world-famous Bazaar, marketplace, exhibition center and bandstand. And during Bazaar, we all need to work our assigned shifts because the organizers put a lot of time into the scheduling to make sure all the booths and workstations are manned adequately and properly. Please make the effort to come out and lend a helping hand and work your assigned shirts. The church needs everyone’s help! Remember, if the church were not here, we would be just standing and looking at each other in an empty dirt field. Remember that. Now, the response to last month’s invitation to join the Sports Committee was very whelming. It was not underwhelming, and it was not overwhelming, it was just whelming. It was just whelming because even though we did get some of our vacancies filled, thank you very much, we still have a couple more positions that are available for you, so please take some time to consider being a part of your children’s activities and join the Sports Committee. We are always looking for new and creative ideas for the program, so by adding new and creative people, we can make that happen. Leave your name and contact information at the church office, or just let your Division Coordinator know that you are interested. Can’t wait to hear from you all! This year, Pack 50 Scouts and parents planted 125 plants and trees at the Stone Lakes National Refuge on Hood-Franklin Road, just west of the I-5 freeway. It was wonderful to be in such a natural setting, immediately south of Elk Grove. This event was organized by Mickey Bennett. On May 5, Pack 50 hosted its annual Bottle Rocket Blast Off, the most fun and exciting Pack event of the year. This year, 56 sleek, skillfully constructed rockets were entered in the launch competition. On May 11, Cub Scout Pack 50 held its 2007 Arrow of Light Ceremony. The Arrow of Light Ceremony marks the end of the 2006–07 scouting season and is the annual promotion and graduation ceremony of Cub Scouts. At the ceremony, all 56 Pack 50 scouts were promoted to their next rank. The Tigers are now Wolves; the Wolves are now Bears, the Bears are now Webelos 1s; and the Webelos 2s are now Boy Scouts! Congratulations Pack 50 scouts! During the evening, the following Webelos 1 scouts were awarded the Metta Religious Award after successfully completing a 10 week course on the Dharma:
This course was taught by Rinban Bob Oshita, who has been offering this class for the last 23 years. Thank you, Reverend Bob! The highlight of this evening was the Arrow of Light Candle Ceremony. Webelos 2 Den Leaders Anthony Ortiz and Ron Ong, with assistance from Den Chief Tyler Sasaki, presented their scouts the Arrow of Light Award, the highest award in Cub Scouting, and the Pack 50 graduation certificate. The highly deserving recipients were:
All eight Pack 50 graduates will now continue on to Boy Scouts Troop 50 or Troop 250. Pack 50 wishes these Webelos 2 scouts and their parents the very best in their future endeavors. Congratulations! Pack 50 is very grateful that it had another highly successful year. This success would not have been possible without the contributions of so many. In the closing remarks of the ceremony, the following people were recognized: - Our excellent leaders, starting with Barbara Sasaki and Denis Ishisaka, our hardworking parents, and our fun-seeking, fast-learning scouts; - Our sponsors, Reverend Bob, Reverend Kaz and the Buddhist Church of Sacramento; - Scoutmaster Spencer Wong and Troop 50; and - Assistant Scoutmaster Don Honda and Troop 250 Masako Thomas Contact Masako Thomas at (916) 482-8770 or e-mail: sakurahanami@hotmail.com. Richard Kai I am fortunate to have Carol Tamai, the heart of our team, and Ken Koyama, who knows where every dollar was spent and accounts for the cash in Dharma School’s treasury, back for the 2007-08 school year. Though there has been talk of retiring from our current positions, we’ll be back for another year to get Carol’s kids (at least one) through Dharma School. I’ve been blessed with having a great cabinet and a superintendent’s dream of veteran teachers at each level with little or no turnover from year to year. A dedicated group of seniors devoted to pleasing Dharma School parents and students is an important component for any comprehensive program to prosper and grow. Reiko, Gladys, Sam, Tak, Rachel, Mike and a weekly supply of donuts from Samantha, plus many, many more volunteers and providers not mentioned make sure our stomachs are fed each and every week. My belt is off to each of you. The closing Dharma School session for 2006-07 is scheduled for June 10 with the prestigious Attendance Awards ceremony at William Land Park. We’re all looking forward to the summer break to plan new activities for the 2007-08 school year, but until then, we look forward to the two favorite summertime events scheduled for July 14 (Obon) and August 11 and 12 (Bazaar). The teachers for each classroom will be contacting its homeroom parent to round up table-bussing workers for the Bazaar. Until then, have a good summer. I’ll be back next year for another round. This year’s Attendance Award picnic will once again be held at William Land Park, located off Riverside Blvd (the same area as last year). My thanks go out to Barbara Sasaki and Eddie Imai for coordinating the children’s games, and to Reiko’s and Glady’s Kitchen for preparing food for this year’s event. Girl Scouts Troop 569Sierra Campbell Girl Scouts Troop 569 have been hard at work this entire year, participating in community events and service projects. Here are some of the ways our troop has participated in this last part of the season. Juniors 2 completed the Bronze Award requirements with a community service project benefiting My Sister's House. They sewed 100 felt bags and filled them with donated toiletry items. They also cooked dinner for the women in their Women to Work program. The toiletry bags were delivered on April 13 to the My Sister's House office. Juniors 2 would like to thank the Sangha for their generous donations. Juniors 2 participated in a flower planting project at the Asian Community Nursing Home on April 28 with Cadettes 5. The girls had fun scooping dirt together and making new friends. On May 12, Juniors 1 and 2 participated in the Golden Gate Bridging Ceremony. Troops from five states participated in this event. Both Junior troops are bridging to the Cadette level. At the end of June, Juniors 1 and 2 together with Brownies 1 will end the year with a camping trip to Camp Fleming. Brownies 5 has been busy finishing their numbers and shapes try-it. They also participated in their very first Bridging ceremony, which the girls really enjoyed. The girls are really looking forward to their end-of-the-year roller skating party at King's roller skating rink. For this event, the girls were able to choose themselves where they wanted their party, and earn enough money through cookie sales to pay for this event. The girls in Troop 569 are continually trying new things, making friends, assisting the community around them in many ways and at the same time learning about themselves. Thank you to the Sangha for supporting the troop and making the Girl Scout experiences possible this year. Sacramento Buddhist Women’s Association J. M.
