President’s Message

Allan Hoshida

The Obon Odori was held on Saturday, July 14, with our Obon/Hatsubon Service on July 15. The Obon Odori was very well attended with lots of dancers and lots of food and refreshments. Special thanks to many volunteers who made our Obon a wonderful cultural/religious event/experience: Hanayagi Juteimai Kai/Donna Wong; Sacramento Taiko Dan/Tiffany Tamarabuchi; Sakura Minyo Doko Dai/Mrs. Toshi Kawamura; Henry Mizushima; Fred Katayama; Reiko Kuruhara and crew; and many dance teachers/instructors. Also thanks to the Board of Trustees Special Events Chairs Sheryl Kajioka and Diane Muranaka for helping to organize the event and the ice cream treat at half time. Our guest speaker for Obon service on Sunday was Sensei Mutsumi Wondra, minister assistant from the Orange County Buddhist Church. Also in attendance as part of the reunion week here at the Betsuin were youth minister assistants from the first and second year Youth Advocacy program.

On Friday evening, July 13, I, together with Ted and Sharon Yoshimura, attended a special service and ceremony in recognition of the BCA youth minister assistants program, held the last two summers at our Betsuin. Many of the past youth from throughout the United States (including Samantha Nitta) were in attendance here at the Betsuin to accept their certificate from Socho Ogui. Thank you very much to Reverend Bob, Reverend Kaz, minister assistants Patti Oshita, Grace Hatano, Tim and Carol Castle, Koichi Mizushima and Peter Inokoji-Kim (Denver Buddhist Church) for hosting/running this recognition reunion. BCA representatives in attendance were Susan Bottari (San Mateo), Charlene Grinolds (White River), Mary Ann Miyao (Sacramento), Keith Sawada, with Reverend Umezu (Jodo Shinshu Center) and Reverend Usuki. Also thanks to lunch crew Sharon Yoshimura, Ruth Seo, Pauline Nishina, Aileen Nishio, Nancy Hashimoto; and the dinner crew led by Reiko, Gladys and crew. In my opinion this is a great BCA youth program that will have lasting long-term positive impact for Jodo Shinshu Buddhism here in the United States. Please join me in thanking everyone for such dedicated service looking to the future.

The 61st Annual Sacramento Betsuin Bazaar will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to help with tent and booth construction. Thanks in advance to the hundreds of volunteers who will help make this Bazaar another huge success. Special recognition and thanks to our chairpersons Steve Kawano and Robbie Midzuno for volunteering again to lead this annual event.

If you are available on Thursday and Friday nights, August 9 and 10, please come on out and help with the food preparation and generally getting ready for the Bazaar. Also your assistance will be appreciated during the take-down on Monday, August 13. On the evenings of August 9 and 10, refreshments will be coordinated by Reiko Kurahara/Gladys Adachi and their kitchen crew, and potluck donations are always welcome.

Some thanks and recognition:

- The yagura and trellis have been remodeled and upgraded. Thanks to Steve Hamamoto (structural engineer), Teresa Kaneko (architect) and Jack Akabori (general contractor) for their help/assistance.

- Congratulations to Boy Scout Troop 50 for its most recent four Eagle Scouts: Gregory Mar, Richard Oguro, Jeffrey Tsumura and Mark Wong. Having been involved in scouting as an adult leader many years ago, this ceremony certainly brought back many wonderful memories. Many adult leaders, parents and friends should be commended on continuing this great, positive program to benefit our boys. Congratulations to all and keep up the good work.

- I want to thank the Board of Trustees building and equipment subcommittee composed of Eddie Imai, Frank Hirota, Don Honda, John Fujimoto, Roger Ito, Roy Imura and Gary Traganza. From keeping up Reverend Kaz’s Dorset house to doing maintenance throughout our church facilities, these folks have been responsible for organizing/leading the many improvements/upgrades. Please extend our thanks to them whenever you see them. (P.S. We received some input regarding the condition of our parking lot from several people over the weekend. Although very expensive, we will endeavor to make improvements to the parking lot as soon as we can.)

- The new Kaikan roll-down screen has recently been installed, and it looks great. Thanks again to Cub Scouts, Sports Committee who donated funds for the screen purchase and to the numerous volunteers who helped install the new screen and removed/demolished the old screen.

Final thoughts for this summer: Our Betsuin has great ministers and minister assistants, wonderful caring sangha members willing to help out in so many different ways. We are indeed very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful sangha community. Our many parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, have paved the way and offered many opportunities for all of us through their hard work and sacrifices. When the Legacy Endowment Fund (and also Jodo Shinshu Center Capital Campaign) information comes your way later this year, please be generous with your contributions. This will be one way in which we all can help thank the innumerable people who have come before us and have allowed us opportunities we all share today. Please do whatever you can to help the Betsuin continue the more than 108-year legacy to serve our wonderful sangha community today, as well as for future generations to come. The motto for the Legacy Endowment Fund is “Honor the Past, Continue the Legacy, Shape the Future.” Please join me and the Legacy Endowment Fund board in this most important endeavor. Thank you.

RB's Corner

Rinban Bob Oshita

Hello and welcome to the month of August…. This month we will be enjoying again our incredible Betsuin Bazaar. This is of course our biggest event of the year. Our annual Bazaar helps significantly to maintain our most successful Betsuin and for many of us, a Sacramento summer would not be complete without it.

I was just visited by one of our past Betsuin Presidents, Wayne Kurahara, and we were talking about the spirit of giving and helping within our community. While we talked, I shared with him a memory from 23 years ago when I first came. It was a time when our Betsuin office was not being staffed full-time and I would often find myself sitting at the front desk.

There was this Issei Bachan who would come in every month like clockwork. She would walk into the office, up to the front desk, and begin unbuttoning her blouse from the waist. Of course the first time I saw this I was surprised to say the least. Then I saw that under her blouse, she had a furoshiki cloth rolled up and tied around her small waist. Without removing it, she would unravel part of the furoshiki and remove two $20 bills. She would place them neatly on the counter between us. Then after carefully refolding the furoshiki that was around her waist, she would button up her blouse.

With a grateful smile she would tell me this was a donation to the Betsuin and turn around to leave. The first time she did this I went after her and asked for her name so we could acknowledge her donation. But she just smiled and waved me away, saying, “Daijobu, daijobu (it’s okay, no need for that).”

It seems that every month, when her Social Security check arrived, she would cash it at the bank and then come to the Betsuin to make a donation. I look back now and realize that each month, she must have been giving a significant percentage of her limited and fixed income — never once asking for a receipt or expecting to be acknowledged. She gave with what in Buddhism we call true dana (selfless giving).

Wayne and I were talking just this afternoon about how amazing it is to encounter such unselfish generosity. And we both realized that all of us who enjoy the Betsuin today are the beneficiaries of so many countless acts of true dana from especially so many Issei and Nisei. We both wondered if we will encounter such selfless giving, as Wayne said, “with no strings attached” in the generations to come.

Namo Amida Butsu.

Minster's Assistants

Tim Castle

As I sit down to write this month’s minister assistant article, the Sacramento Betsuin has just finished hosting the Youth Advocacy Committee (YAC) Summer Youth Retreat, 2005 and 2006 double reunion, somehow titled “Dooble Reunion.” Another reason I am sitting is because I am exhausted!

For four days, the Betsuin hosted the reunion of 14 participants from the 2005 and 2006 YAC Sacramento retreats. Joining them for two days were an additional 12 participants from the 2007 retreat being held at the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley. That’s right, the membership of the Betsuin grew by 26 for a couple of days.

As in past retreats, the reunion focused on the participants taking an active role in the three daily services. The kids rang the kansho, led sutra chanting, gave dharma talks, and even laid down some serious gatha singing. Their focus on each of these tasks was truly amazing. In between these services, everyone attended classes on chanting the Shoshinge, a workshop on self-reflection, and RB’s class on the Nembutsu.

This year, there were two moments that really stood out in my mind. First, the entire group of 26 was split up into six teams to take over teaching duties. These groups taught 15-minute classes on Interdependence, Impermanence, The Three Poisons (GAS), The Four Gates, The Four Noble Truths, and the life of Shinran Shonin. It was exciting to see their understanding of these topics and their fresh approach in teaching.

Second, the participants from ’05 and ’06 were recognized by Socho Ogui with the newly designated title of Youth Minister Assistants (YMAs). This title recognizes these young Buddhists as having basic training and practical abilities in preparing the altar for service, leading sutra chanting, and ringing the kansho. Socho again made this ceremony memorable for all in attendance. We all hope that the YMAs continue on their path to one day be our future Sangha leaders!

It was truly amazing to see the growth and maturity of our Dharma buddies over the year or two that we had last seen them. Many are now in college, or just recently graduated from high school and eagerly looking forward to the changes that college life will soon bring. Even the high schoolers seemed to change so much since their last visit. We look forward to seeing the 2007 YAC participants involved in future events as well.

One thing was clear: that the truth of Interdependence is something that we do not need to prove as we are constantly surrounded by everyday examples. These retreats are yet another reminder that the lives of each and every one of the reunion participants is now a part of our lives…and our lives are now a part of theirs.

Message from the Sacramento Buddhist Church Legacy Endowment Fund Board

Donate From Your IRA and Avoid Taxes on the Distribution

Law Expires at End of 2007

Under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, individuals who are 70½ or older may transfer up to $100,000 during 2007 from their IRA or Rollover IRA to qualified charitable organizations, like the Sacramento Buddhist Church, and avoid paying income tax on that money. The transfer counts toward the donor’s required minimum distribution, but does not generate the personal taxable income that a distribution or withdrawal would. It also does not provide a tax deduction, so a donor does not need to itemize their tax returns in order to take advantage of this benefit. The law expires at the end of 2007, so act now if you would like to take advantage of this new opportunity to make a charitable gift to the Sacramento Buddhist Church Endowment Fund.

For more information, contact your personal financial or tax advisor or call the Sacramento Buddhist Church office, 446-0121.

August

August is here and that means Bazaar. By now all the sports families should have been notified of their work assignments. Please be sure to work your assigned shifts, because a lot of time and energy goes into coordinating and scheduling all the different jobs that need to be worked, and it only works when all the people show up for their assigned shifts.

A good strong Bazaar keeps the church good and strong which keeps the programs good and strong, including the sports program. This is our very own circle of life. We would hate to see what would happen if our circle were to be broken. Work your shift and keep our circle strong.

September

September is almost here and that means a new Dharma School year. And that means the attendance tracking devices will be engaged and will pick up where the Dharma School picnic left off. Remember, the first two weeks of Dharma School are extra credit days, so be sure to be there and get those free and easy extra credits. Basketball registration occurs in September, which means we will be out in the courtyard after service. Registration will only be for a couple of Sundays, so be ready to sign up your players for the basketball season.

June

June was here, and that means Father’s Day, and that means the annual Central Cal Tournament in Fresno, and that means a weekend full of gaming. There was basketball gaming, amusement park gaming, and table gaming, so whichever gaming was your favorite, I am sure there was enough to keep you occupied.

While walking around the various gyms in Fresno and Clovis, there was an odd sense of familiarity, a sense of knowing just about every other team in the gym; it seemed as though it was a Sacramento Betsuin Tournament because everywhere you looked, you saw another member of our Sangha, but yet it was not, and also you did not have the responsibility of being the gym coordinator; you were able to arrive for your game, sit as a spectator and then leave when your game was done. Many of our teams did make the road trip to play in the Central Cal. There were some of our teams that won their brackets and some that didn’t, and it appeared that a fun time was had by all in the air conditioned gyms, on the water slides, and especially at those little social events at the hotels and that’s what that means.

We would also like to thank all of those who came out early one Saturday morning to help put up the big tent for Obon and Bazaar. There seemed to be about 30 people out there hauling tent pieces, climbing ladders, hooking the cables, tying the chochins and stringing the lights. It was a great turnout this year. Thank you to you all.

Good night and have a pleasant August….See you at Bazaar!

Dharma School News

Richard Kai

The Obon festival is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors and bringing back the memories from days gone by. It is a time for families to reunite, have a serving of shoyu weenies over rice, eat a few snow cones, and visit with friends at the mid-summer’s Obon Odori held at the Betsuin during the month of July.

The memorial service for the passing of a high school friend’s parent at the end of June was the enabling event leading to a gathering of the “down river” gang and their families on the day of the Temple’s Obon. The service started with a historical recount of my friend’s dad’s accomplishments, his devotion to family, and the reading of “White Ashes,” a most profound article on life and its passing.

The family welcomed everyone to stay for lunch after the service; it was a time for us to turn to stories of the great times we had as kids, young adults, raising families, and rekindling our spirits from yesteryear. We called on the memories, had more than a few laughs, and renewed our friendship that continues to run deep to divert the attention on sorrow for the grieving family. With words unspoken, we will always be there for each other in time of need, sorrow and celebration. The journey to our collectively shared Obon was worth a day trip to the Bay Area. Friendships run deep and long.

The closing of the Obon on the Temple grounds marked the end of one event and the start of another — the 61st Annual Bazaar. The seniors have been busy preparing for both events during the months of June and July, along with the help of many Sangha members who volunteered their time to tie loose ends together and get ready for the Betsuin’s major summer fundraiser.

There’s a lot of time and effort that goes into making the Bazaar a success. It takes a lot of person power to make the engine run smoothly. It is your opportunity to show gratitude and pay back the Betsuin and the organization members who slaved throughout the year to provide your family with sports and scouting programs, Dharma School education and Sunday classes, adult women and men Buddhist association activities and other fun-filled events. The cry for help should not be prompted by a phone call or for anyone to find it convenient to whimper weak excuses similar to my dog ate my homework. If you’re not available the weekend of the Bazaar, then help with pre-Bazaar activities such as scrubbing vegetables, hauling ladders, sweeping and dusting, dismantling the food booths or the post-Bazaar task to tear down the canvas tent the day after the event. Your out-of-town for the family vacation excuse cannot possibly last three contiguous months from June through August. If it does, then your monetary donation to the Temple would offset the need for this major fundraiser. Pony up one or a couple of hundred thousand dollars so the rest of us don’t have to work 14-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. Thank you for your kind donation; otherwise, lift your butt out of that lounge chair and get to work!

As summer starts, many Scouting activities have occurred and many activities are yet to come! On June 22 through 24, the Troop went on a camping trip with its newest Smurf Scouts where they fished, played capture the flag, and the Smurfs got a first glimpse of Troop 50 life.

June 29 was a tentative Patrol Meeting date. July 6 was the Lantern Setup and Overnighter for the Obon on the weekend. Also, July 6 was the Royaneh Camp Pack Check for all the Scouts attending summer camp, where the Scouts will get their gear checked before going to camp. On July 7 and 8, the church held its Obon dance and Obon service.

On July 13 the Troop held its monthly Greenbar, had a regular Troop meeting and there was also a Parent Meeting. July 15 through 21 was the Troop’s outing to Camp Royaneh, where they spent a week having fun and earning merit badges.

Thursday, July 26 was a tentative Patrol Meeting day, and on July 27, the Troop volunteered to help at the Bazaar pullout. On the weekend of July 28 and 29, the church held Bazaar construction.

August starts off with the Nembutsu Camporee at San Francisco State University on August 3 through 5. Also on August 3 are a regular Troop Meeting and the monthly Parent Meeting. On August 4 there is a planned Troop Family Outing also. On August 10, the Troop will help out at Bazaar construction, and the actual Bazaar will take place on August 11 and 12. As summer kicks in, the Scouts will have time to relax from school, but there is still a lot to do for Scouts!
