Sangha
President’s
Message Allan Hoshida Our New Year’s Eve service (Joya-e) was very well attended. This service was a good way to express gratitude for the countless blessings we have received throughout the year. Our New Year’s Day service (Shusho-e) was also very well attended, followed by a fabulous otoki luncheon, organized by Patti Oshita, Michiko Nakata and our wonderful Reiko, Gladys & Crew. Special thanks to all of the Sangha members who brought numerous delicious foods to share with everyone. This is a great Betsuin tradition, to socialize and greet each other on the first day of the new year. In many ways this New Year’s Day tradition reminds me of when my grandfather used to take us to see his friends/family on New Year’s Day. Often we would leave early in the morning and get back in the early evening after a full day of eating, drinking and wishing everyone a happy new year. And our family would once again eat the great New Year’s Day dinner special foods that mom and obachan made that day. Even today we tease my sister to make finger Jello or cream puffs the way mom used to make them. Of course we encourage her, but as always we know, it can never replace the way mom used to make them. What a wonderful tradition and memories! Throughout the month of December, Meriko and I had the opportunity to attend a number of year-end dinners/activities. We want to thank the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, BWA, and Tanoshimikai organizations for their warm reception, food and hospitality. Each organization has so many wonderful, caring folks who give freely of their time to help lead, organize and carry out events like these throughout the year. Especially since we have been involved with the Cub Scout and Boy Scout organizations with our son, taking part in these activities, watching and observing, was in a way reliving some of the wonderful times we had as Scout parents. Please enjoy your time with your young kids as this time will pass quickly. Learn to slow down, soak in the moment and truly appreciate this opportunity. Congratulations to all of these groups and please let me know if there is anything the Board of Trustees can do for your organization. One special observation: This year the Boy Scouts, as part of their dinner event, recognized the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento with presents to be given to kids in other parts of the city. Also, the Cub Scouts recognized the Mustard Seed organization, a non-profit school to benefit children of the homeless. What a great gesture on the part of our Scouts, Scout leaders and families to look beyond just themselves and serve/give to others less fortunate. Congratulations, and keep up the great work. On a similar note, my congratulations to Jennifer Tanaka and the whole Jr. YBA organization. During the Christmas season, Jr. YBA members participated in the Adopt-a-Family program in association with Volunteers of America. They selected a family in need, a mother and her two young children ages, 7 and 5. They led, organized, made flyers and announcements, and presented their collected clothing, toys, money, etc. to the family. In addition, members woke up early on Sunday and made breakfast for those who donated to this family. Great job, Jr. YBA. On February 29-March 1, the BCA National Council Meeting will be held in Portland, Oregon, hosted by the Northwest District. Temple leaders, ministers and representatives will be attending from throughout the United States to discuss BCA’s budget, Jodo Shinshu Center, Campaign BCA — The 21st Century, and many other issues. In addition to myself, the following persons will be attending from our temple: Rinban Bob Oshita, Reverend Kaz Nakata, President-Elect Richard Kai and BCA National Board Secretary Mary Ann Miyao. Please help me welcome Gordon Nitta, our most recent Board of Trustees member. Gordon is currently the Betsuin Sports Committee chair and has been Boy Scout troop adult leader for many years. I look forward to working with Gordon on the Board and thank him very much for his leadership, guidance and giving back to our sangha community. It is the unselfish efforts of people like Gordon throughout the years that have made the Buddhist Church of Sacramento what it is today. A reminder to the Board of Trustees, elders, affiliated and sponsored organization representatives, ministers’ assistants: On Tuesday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., we will be having a special recognition dinner honoring our recent Kyoshi-certified Ministers’ Assistants Patti, Tim and Carol prior to our regular Board of Trustees meeting. Please join us if you can.
Rinban Bob Oshita Hello…and welcome to the month of February. The cold winter days of January are now past and we begin to sense the spring of 2008 approaching. This is a thought-provoking year for me. This year I will celebrate my 60th birthday. I remember when our family celebrated my Dad’s 60th. I also remember quietly thinking, “Wow, Dad’s old.” Only now am I beginning to understand the meaning of the expression, “You’re only as old has you feel.” For the longest time I felt like I was 39. However, more and more, I am beginning to feel suddenly 60. I remember seeing a documentary once on Latin American artists. In this documentary, there was an interview with a sculptor living in Mexico City. He was 90 years old and still actively creating very large, beautiful sculptures. When he was asked if there was anything he wished he could have, his response was this: He said, “I’d give anything to be 80 years old again. I sure had a lot of energy when I was 80.” I laughed and thought, “How wonderful and how true.” However old we are fortunate to become, all of us would be happy to be (at least) 10 years younger. So as I anticipate this milestone event, I am reminding myself that if I am fortunate to make 70, I will be wishing I could be 60 again. And with this awareness, I must try to enjoy and appreciate every age of my life; for it is so true that I am living today — an age I will wish I could be years from now. If we lived our lives feeling as if each day was a “wish come true,” we would begin to live each day with that feeling of “gratitude beyond words” that we call “a life of nembutsu.” Wishing everyone just such a life…. Gratefully, Rev. Bob (who is still only 59) Greeters’ ProgramSpring 2008 From The OfficeThanks to Kevin Morita and Jenny Kushida for helping sort and stuff calendar envelopes at the last minute. We were lucky that they were available to help us out. The following day, Grace & Billy Hatano, Kevin Morita and Jenny Kushida came to finish up the “stuffing.” Thanks to you all. Please pick up your 2008 calendars at the office. Thank you! Church MaintenanceEd Imai Over the last month, the following members performed maintenance on the Betsuin’s facilities. Boy, has time flown by — it seems as though just 31 days ago it was Hello to 2008, and now we are already into February. It being February means that our annual Bazaar, the biggest event our church has to offer, is merely six months away, and Steve Kawano and the Steering Committee are already getting things prepared for that event, so mark that on your calendars, and be ready for this year’s installment of the 62nd Annual Bazaar on August 9-10, 2008. I would be remiss if I did not mention the special visitor we had in January. We do appreciate having Mr. Gary Muramoto making a guest appearance for Sunday service. Thanks Gary! Also, a huge and tremendous “thank you” to Sam Adachi for braving the cold weather to sell our extra mochi at Oto’s. Sam does this every year, and without fail, he manages to sell every last pound of mochi. So, it is our pleasure to present Sam with the Mochi Salesman of the Year Award. Thanks, Sam! OK, enough of that. Let’s embark on what we have to look forward to in the coming weeks. The 2007-2008 NCCL basketball league will wind down in February. February 17 will be the last of the regularly scheduled games. There will be a two-week break before the March Madness returns to Northern California. This year March has five weekends, and guess what, each one has a tournament for us to attend. Every now and then, strange things happen to the calendar and the months, but 2008 has more than one phenomenon happening. First of all, the five weekends in a month is unusual, but happens. The second and more rare is the fact that Easter falls on March 23. Now that is most unusual! So, for us long-standing Sacramentans, we are very familiar with our own March Madness with our 37th Annual Betsuin Tournament, the SJUMC Annual Tournament and the SASF Annual Tournament completely filling our March weekends. But, this year, there are five weekends in March and that extra weekend is also Easter, so we have the San Jose Ninja Tournament to add to our schedules. The usual and customary tradition is that the Ninja tournament always falls on Easter, so when Easter is the last weekend of April, that is when they have their tournament, and when Easter falls on the fourth weekend of March, there you have it. So, this year’s March Madness will be even more maddening with five tournaments in five weekends! Our 37th Annual Tournament kicks off the March Madness the very first weekend of March and this year we will be playing at: Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation (SASF), Hiram Johnson, McClatchy, Kennedy, Rosemont, Florin High, Valley High, Sutter Middle and Didion K-8. Make plans to come out and see the games and while there, fill your stomachs at our concession stands. And if you know of anyone who is not playing and has nothing else better to do that weekend, have them be a scorekeeper or timekeeper. That way they can watch the games and make some money to boot! Just let us know who is interested and we’ll try to utilize their talents. Your team moms will distribute your team’s location and schedule in the next few weeks before the league is done. We know that the main reason our program is a success year after year is due to our coaches, and for that we want to acknowledge our coaches at our Coaches Appreciation Dinner. This year, the dinner will be on March 16, so please set that evening aside and help us celebrate our coaching staff. This is your early warning notice. More details will be forthcoming. Well, I can tell by the setting sun that my time is just about up, so until next time, keep your link bright and strong. Important dates to remember: February 2 Super Bowl Saturday - All games played on this day. February 3 Super Bowl Sunday No games played on this day. February 7 Chinese New Year begins. This year, 55 sleek, finely tuned cars were entered in the race, and at the end, only one car was on top. The 2008 Pinewood Derby Champion is Webelos 1 Scout Timothy Wong! The Pack also presented special awards to the most attractive cars. The 2008 Pinewood Derby winners are: First Place: Timothy Wong Second Place: Jarod Bartlett Third Place: Tyler Wong Fourth Place: Kyle Fujii Pride of the Pack Brenton Loui Best Paint Job: Davis Yasuda Scout’s Honor: Alex Ng Sleekest Design: Austin Sakata Most Creative: Cameron Takeda Cubmaster’s Favorite: Eric Shebert Special thanks for organizing this event go to Pinewood Derby Chairman Jerry Lee and his committee members: Mike Kvarme, Mark Nguyen, Kim Wilkins, Steve Sasaki, Al Hernandez, Sal Gasca, Stan Wong, Greg Kochi, Les Wong and Mike Marshall. Also, the Pack would like to thank Guest Starter Mickey Bennett, and Guest Timekeeper Karen Adachi. Job well done, everyone! We all know about his long arm that’s capable of stretching around buildings to tap you on the shoulder to get you do so something — hard to say “no,” as we all know. Patti didn’t many 23-plus years ago; look where she is now. Whether it’s to manage a project, work the Bazaar, bus tables, move furniture, be a guest speaker, we all know the final outcome. Just say “yes,” since he’s very relentless. Well, I thought I had the upper hand knowing that someday he was going to corner me to move up the induction line, waiting for my turn to take hold of the president’s gavel. But, I had my game plan. I tied stipulations in my response to his plea, motives that would break his usual nonchalant manner, entrapment of President Hoshida into my finely crafted web — I had checkmate just waiting to hear him ask the question. It was foolproof. Well, after he popped the question, I told him firmly that I would accept the position of vice president, but would not move up as president of the Betsuin until he found my replacement as superintendent of the Dharma School. He didn’t even blink an eye, miss a heartbeat, break a sweat or take a deep breath. Instead, rubbed his hands together in front of Allan and me and laughed, “Great, now I have the both of you tied up forever.” Allan and I were stunned. His response meant that he would not look very hard for the next superintendent, knowing that he had Allan serving as president and me as vice president and superintendent of the Dharma School FOREVER! He walked away a happy man. Bakatare. What a fool I am. Upcoming Events February 3: Scout Sunday — No Class February 10: Nirvana Day Family Service and Open House: No Class March 1-2: Betsuin Basketball Tournament March 8-9: SJUMC Basketball Tournament Donations Dharma School “courtyard” gratefully acknowledges donations from the following: Gladys Adachi Valerie Fong Grace & Bill Hatano Tak Ito Utako Kimura Reiko Kurahara Terry Makishima Cheryl Mark Edith Matsuoka Yo Morisawa Gerald & Diane Muranaka Pat Okamoto Oto’s Marketplace Ron & Eileen Otsuji Sachi Sawada Hiroko Takamoto Kari Umeda Amy Watanabe Sueko & Haruo Yamashita Fusaye Yokoyama Elaine Yoshikawa Boy ScoutsJimmy Tsuruoka Winter break is already over and school and troop meetings have started again. Since December, the troop started to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s, there was no theme, thus no troop meetings. The troop did have a Personal Management merit badge meeting with Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Tabuchi on December 15. Winter break began on December 22 and lasted until January 6. After Christmas and New Year’s, a troop meeting was held on January 4 and Senior Patrol Leader Evan Hirano and the troop instructors discussed first aid about different bandage wrappings and splints since first aid is the theme of the month for January. There was also another Personal Management merit badge meeting on January 4. A Greenbar meeting and a troop meeting were scheduled on January 11. At the Greenbar, they discussed the Crab Feed on January 19, the Family Ski Outing with Assistant Scoutmaster Jim Tabuchi, and Scout Sunday with Assistant Scoutmaster Gordon Nitta on February 3 and practice on February 1 at 7:30 p.m. At the troop meeting, the troop constructed four stations, each one with a different activity for the four patrols. There was a station with Assistant Scoutmaster Karen Yee and they helped clean out peg legs. Then the second station, led by Troop Scribe Matthew Nitta and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Eric Wong, had trivia games with questions about Boy Scouts. The third station, led by Troop Instructor Jared Hara and Troop Instructor Bryant Lee, was a relay race that went over arm splints that were discussed at the last troop meeting. Finally, the fourth station, led by Patrol Leader Benjamin Fong of the Senior Scouts and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Scott Yasuhara, was for practicing bandaging, arm splints, and leg splints. Girl Scouts Troop 569Jayne Rasmussen Cadettes 5 had a Father/Daughter Holiday party. The girls prepared a wonderful meal of chicken nugget appetizers, mushroom tartlets, caesar salad, garlic bread, hamburger/cheese/noodle casserole and chocolate croissants. The fathers helped as sous-chefs. The last father/daughter event was when the girls were in second grade, so it was nice to get the fathers together again. Just as before, the dads were chatting up a storm . . . and they call women social butterflies?!?!? The girls did a fantastic job preparing, serving, cleaning and making nice party favors for their dates. It was another occasion that will be remembered fondly by all! Cadettes 1 held a “Girls Nite Out” fundraiser on December 21, 2007. Sixteen Brownies and their friends attended an evening of activities including nail painting, cookie decorating and ornament making. A highlight was a step dancing demonstration by the Girl Scout Troop “Hypnotics.” The girls broke up into groups and learned a fun step routine. They did great! Parents got the evening to themselves, a win-win for all! Marta Wada, co-leader of Cadettes 1, worked with The Sacramento Bee’s Book of Dreams and the Girl Scout Council to purchase dance outfits for the Hypnotics and the Cadettes 1 girls donated their Christmas gift exchange money to the Hypnotics as well. Brownies 4 celebrated the end of the year with a fantastic Christmas party at the Stites’s home, filled with Christmas projects, music, secret Santa, and lots and lots of food. We have been able to complete a Safety Sense try-it, complete with a superb presentation of First Aid for Little People sponsored by the Sierra chapter of the American Red Cross. The girls really enjoyed it and learned a lot of first aid tips! We worked on the Senses try-it in January, and really enjoyed smelling all the great spices, and tasting all the good (and bad!) jelly beans. We are looking forward to participating in Scout Sunday in early February. Thank you in advance to all the Sangha members who are supporting us in the cookie sale. Happy eating! Brownies 3 had a blast planning and hosting a holiday party for the Daisy troop and acting as a “big sister” to the girls! The Brownies helped the younger girls make crafts, took pictures with Santa Claus, and sat down for a yummy dinner. The Brownies were also guests at a holiday party hosted by Cadettes 6. Some of the Brownies attended the Sacramento Ballet’s performance of “The Nutcracker,” which was a wonderful event that the girls thoroughly enjoyed. We also made sit-upons, which taught the girls the basics to sewing, make s’mores, and attended a Kings game that included an opportunity to “high five” the Kings players. Scout Sunday practice is coming up Friday, February 1 for the event on February 3. Sacramento Buddhist Women’s Association Utako Kimura
SBWA begins its monthly meetings with a short service at 6:45 p.m. — a moment of unity and harmony. We inadvertently failed to provide all the December 2007 news, and submit it here along with January 2008.December 2007Reverend Kazuaki Nakata spoke of how we sometimes go through life without fully realizing to be grateful for the many ways that others make our life better — such as the courtyard crew rising early Sunday mornings to prepare food and drinks for us. Reverend had noticed there was much food wasted. It was like, because the food was free, it didn’t have much value. He had mentioned this on the previous Sunday. Reverend was pleased to note that the next Sunday, there was much less waste. When we are grateful for the kindness of others, we call this okagesama desu.Thank You2007 President Molly Kimura expressed a grateful thank you to the Board members for their dedication and support throughout the successful year.Religious Chairs Fusako Takahashi and Midori Ito were glowing in their appreciation for the help received for Bodhi Day and our end-of-year festivities: 9:30 a.m. oshoko representative: Jean Ota; 12:30 p.m. Tsuito Hoyo service: Oshoko Mollie Kimura, Chair Alice Kataoka and Organist Machiko Kimura; a special thank you to guest speaker Reverend Kodo Umezu, director of the Center for Jodo Shinshu Study; the Bonenkai Chairs Midori Ito and Norrine Okamoto for the delicious obento and most enjoyable time. January 2008Reverend Bob Oshita talked about reflection, on how quickly time passes. On Reverend’s December 2007 Japan trip, he noticed that many of the senior teachers had been his classmates. In 2008, the Year of the Rat, Reverend celebrates his 60th birthday! Further, Reverend shared his two New Year resolutions: A physical resolution, have one massage a month. An internal resolution, to live life so he can die at any age, without regret. Reverend also spoke of a lady who had lost her husband, who said that Reverend and Patti should “make each day a memory.” We forget how impermanent life is and should treasure each day.Reverend Oshita led the opening gassho. Conducting her first meeting, President Fusako Takahashi thanked Reverend Oshita, Reverend Kaz and Michiko Nakata, as well as Board members for their support. She extended a warm welcome to new Board members Sandy Nishimura-Yee and Elaine Yoshikawa. Both have received a brief orientation.
