Welcome to the Buddhist Church of Sacramento

Post

Since 1899, the temple has been a central location for spiritual, cultural and community activities in Sacramento. We practice Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, founded by Shinran Shonin in Japan in the 13th century.

Generations of families and its members have come to the temple in times of prosperity, of struggle, of sorrow and of joy.

Members are grateful to the Buddhist Church of Sacramento for being an integral part of their lives. In a spirit of Okagesama*, the Wall of Appreciation was unveiled on Feb. 26, 2017, to “Honor the Past, Continue the Legacy and Shape the Future.”

The Wall is an homage to those who came before us, as well as an acknowledgment to those who are part of our community today paving the way for generations to come. (*Okagesama means, “We are grateful. We would not be here if not for the sacrifice and support of others.”)

Shin Buddhism in America has connected well beyond its initial group of Issei (first generation Japanese-Americans) who immigrated from Japan in the early 1900s.

While honoring our Japanese heritage and culture, we welcome all who want to learn about Buddhism and be a part of our vibrant temple community. We enjoy having remarkable diversity in our congregation participating in the many activities available.

Included in our many organizations are Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venture Crew Scouts, Jr. Young Buddhist Association, Adult Buddhist Association, Buddhist Women’s Association, Choir, Dharma School, Basketball League and Sakura Gakuen (Japanese language school).

The Buddhist Church of Sacramento is among the three largest congregations of the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA), and one of the five large, regional Betsuin temples in BCA. The largest event of the year is the annual Food and Cultural Bazaar during the second weekend in August, when you are invited to enjoy a weekend of delicious food, learning about Buddhism and socializing.

You are welcome to attend Dharma Services, which are held every Sunday morning at 9:30. We look forward to meeting you.
